Its not every day where you see an independent and self distributed film from a director making his feature film debut go toe to toe at the box office with a film being helmed by a legend in the horror genre but that is exactly what happened on the weekend of January 30th when Markiplier's "Iron Lung" went up against Sam Raimi's "Send Help".
Markiplier officially announced that he was going to be making a feature film adaptation of the video game by the same name in April of 2023 and filming began in Austin, Texas in March of 2023. Markiplier co-wrote, starred in, and directed the film. They wrapped filming around the end of April of 2023. There was a longer post-production process but the final trailer released along with the official theatrical release date announcement on December 5th, 2025.
Mark Fishbach, better known as Markiplier from his YouTube channel, enjoyed some incredible success as his film raked in around $18 million in its opening weekend finishing second to Send Help's around $19 million. The worldwide gross through Iron Lung's second weekend is an estimated $37 million with about 90% of that being from the domestic box office. To put that in perspective, Iron Lung's budget was around $3 million and it was completly self-funded and self-distributed. There was no bigger studio behind it to fund it or put it out in theaters. Just Markiplier. He didn't buy ad space online or trailer spots on tv.
Iron Lung started in just 60 screens across the United States and he told his fans to call their local theaters and ask for them to show it if they wanted it and they listened. In the following days Iron Lung was able to expand to almost 4,000 screens. Iron Lung has outperformed initial box office estimates of around a $9 million opening weekend and this run highlights indie filmmaking viability and YouTube creator influence in Hollywood, with strong word-of-mouth and holdover performance.
While Markiplier isn't just your average "Joe Schmo", the success of Iron Lung should give young and indie filmmakers hope. You may not have 38 million subscribers on YouTube like he does, but Markiplier is still someone who is not "in" Hollywood. He did it all himself without studio backing. He proved that if you can build a loyal audience and that audience has trust in you, you will not need a studio to greenlight your film. If you have the skill and the passion, you can make things happen. Sometimes all you have to do is pick up a camera and start.
